Dr. Drew talks to student suspended over Facebook post

Anonymous said...: Thank you for showing the exact words of her Facebook post, Dr. Drew. The rest of the press is reporting that she "wished Osama would kill her teacher." Clearly what she said is protected speech and not a threat at all (it's a wish, people) and so the school does not have jurisdiction over what she says outside of school. By the way, I have heard the posting was "privacy protected" so only a few people could even see it, but some overzealous hating parent turned her words in to the principal. The HLN "experts" are missing the point. Morally wrong maybe to wish someone ill, but legaly wrong for the school to punish for off-campus behavior. Fire the prinsipal and punish the parent who turned her in.; 10:32 PM
jim said...: The principal acted correctly. Teachers should not be threatened by students. This parent needs to actually be a parent. People are responsible for their actions. if the student writes it that is her right. But the threatened teacher and the school have rights too.

Anonymous said...: Actually, it sounds like the parent was trying to be the parent, but the school decided to do it for her. How dare they step in without even a phone call. The post was private and they had to make the child open her Facebook for them to even see it.; 9:15 PM

Anonymous said...: I grew up in the 80's when there were brands like commodore, and social networking was prodigy & aol, etc., I don't think anyone at the that time could even imagine what the world wide wide would've become just 30 years later. I don't like Facebook for a number of reason which range from privacy issues to psychological, etc., I don't think children and young teenagers should be allowed access to social networking sites, and be limited to what they can view on the web. I'd like to see children going outside to play with other children, read books from the library, spend quality time with their families, etc., If Facebook has their way, you will have an entire generation of children who will lack social interaction skills, etc., They will not be able to compete on a Global Scale, etc., All I can say it's a nightmare.

I cancelled my Facebook account the other day, and joined a site onlymeworld. To be honest I was impressed that there was a site that didn't require you full name to protect your identity from cybercriminals, to join you must be atleast 16 years old, and they have everything Facebook has plus more. For myself I do business, and need to social network. How do you find your desired network about 500 million users. With this site onlymeworld I choose my network, and I'm either matched or can use their search tools to find my desired networks.; 7:21 AM

"I wish Osama would kill my teacher" is what they keep reporting, but what she said was "I wish Osama had killed my teacher rather than the 3000 other people in the Twin Towers." This is not a threat, Jim. A threat is something that poses "imminent danger" of actually happening. Why do grown men and women choose to overreact and vilify this poor kid?
